2010 Article 26 Volume 4
Texting From The TWEET Tops
TWITTER

Technology and the Internet is in a constant mode of change. Have you noticed? Just kidding, of course you have, LOL! For those of you that are not familiar with the TWITTER abbreviation; LOL, it means Laughing Out Loud. Since we are agreed that social and informational networking is growing in popularity and at a very rapid pace, all of us who procrastinate in the technology arena must realize, it's time to move in the the 21st century. Anyone, anywhere can TWEET within minutes and you can join in on the fun!

What is TWITTER?
It is considered social and information networking. It is a rich source of instantly updated information called (TWEETS). There are an endless array of topics to choose from and all one needs to do is follow a ministry, person or company and you will be in their steady stream of TWEETS instantly. TWEETS are updated in real-time so there are no delays on keeping up on the latest information from whoever you may be following. Another basic idea behind social networking is 'Conversation' which means TWITTER is interactive. You can comment on any TWEET in your TWITTER stream at any time.

Are you ready for some socializing on the Web? Maybe you are in ministry and have messages you would like to share in your stream? Your TWITTER home page will ask you this simple question: What's happening? You will have a maximum of 140 characters that can be used to TWEET something that you feel others would benefit from. 140 characters is not a lot of texting space so abbreviations are very popular and also programs that shorten a URL pointing to a web page. TWEETS take careful consideration and only have enough space for the bottom line so, choose wisely.

Below is an example of one of my latest TWEETS. I enjoy encouraging others with my TWEETS and often use short meaningful quotes. I'm big on giving honor where honor is due and include the persons name who spoke the quote in the 140 characters in my TWEET.

Example of a TWEET
Friendship is a sheltering tree. – Samuel Taylor Coleridge 1772-1834, British Poet, Critic, Philosopher (107 characters were used, out of 140)

Here's a few fun TWITTER terms that will help you catch on fast, that call it TWITTERSPEAK.
  • tweet: posting on twitter
  • tweeter: a user of Twitter
  • tweeterboxes: twitters that tweet too much
  • tweeple: twitter users, twitter people
  • twitosphere: a group of tweeple
  • twalking: walking while twittering via text
There are a lot more terms in TWITTERSPEAK (66 to be exact) but you get the idea. :) this means SMILE!

Social media to some may seem like hiding behind a computer which in very few instances may true. But think about it, being able to receive tidbits (TWEETS) of information about a person, ministry or business brings us closer in some ways to them. We can get a feeling of intimacy with our fellow TWITTERS even though we are unable to participate in their lives on a more person level due to time zones, location or even status. There are many TWITTERS that are just waiting to make a connection through a simple little TWEET.

The bottom line is this, TWITTER offers an easy, free and quick way to reach out and touch our world like never before with a few strokes on the keyboard. Once you get the basics down on TWITTERING you may be ready for Face Book? LOL! (
